Embrace

As fans of DC punk know, Embrace was the short-lived post-hardcore outfit formed by Ian MacKaye after the demise of Minor Threat. The band helped shape the sound that the rock media dubbed 'emocore'. Here's what MacKaye had to say about the term:
"I must say one thing. I must say emocore must be the stupidest f$%ing thing I've ever heard in my entire life. But just in case you are wondering, I read in my Thrasher the other day, that in fact, what my band (Embrace) along with other bands (Rites Of Spring, Beefeater, etc) in this city (Washington DC) are playing is emocore. I'm thinking Emo Phillips, the comedian (look it up if you don't know who he is), emocore? Emotional hardcore?? As if hardcore wasn't emotional to begin with. Anyway, it's caca. I hate to say it but you can only hold your silence for too long about this stupid sh#$t."
I agree Ian, and I agree with everything you have to say in this, my favorite Embrace tune:

Summer Breezin'

Is there anything lovelier than a cool summer sea breeze blowing through the jasmine of your mind? (?)

Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze (1972)
The Isley Brothers - Summer Breeze (1974)

Norman Cook

I've been meaning to upload this mix for a while. It's hard to remember what Smalltown's sets sounded like or were intended to sound like when we started Hai Karate in the late 90s. But as far as the electronic stuff goes this mix has a bunch of the tunes on it that were big for us back then, then there was all the funk and hip hop as well. Anyways - we are Big Beat DJs I guess is what I am trying to say. Also that Fatboy Slim is the dude, I heard that he still has to approve every record that goes out on Southern Fried. Lastly - the second tune on this mix is by Sir Drew who now goes by Chicken Lips, formerly Bizarre Inc.

fatboy slim - new years eve 1997 mix

Despite being a NYE mix its got a reall summer vibe, I guess all big beat does. Enjoy.

RETURN OF THE MAC

Got free tix (thanks Hana) to go see Fleetwood Mac beat their old hits to death and it was AWESOME. In spite of it all - Christine McVie's absence, Stevie's laryngitis and inability to move her fat arse around, Mick Fleetwood's unfortunate drum solo - that was one of the most engaging arena shows I've ever seen. Buckingham is such an insane shredder.

DUDE SUSHI

Most of you probably know that the purpose of the pickled ginger at sushi spots is to cleanse your palate. Since we've none of that, this song will have to do the trick. Then again, judging by the title, it might be a trap. Just grab it:

Ken Laszlo - Hey Hey Guy

It reminds me a lot of all this Valerie records type shit that people seem to love so much these days.

Get Yur Fuk On (Smalltown Remix)

A few months back we hit the road for the Redbull Three style competition
out East with Jokers of the Scene. We spent our last night playing some
records at Team Canada's new Bar in Montreal "Blue Dog".
Grandtheft was about to release the "Get Yur Fuk on" single from the
first signing on his new label Tremendous Records the Wong Boys.
We brewed up a quick remix to play out and I figured we could
share it now that the Ep has been out for a while.

FUBAR II

Further to the topic of sweet bangers, we have confirmation that a deal has been struck to make a sequel to the greatest movie ever made. Fubar II will mark the return of Deaner and Terry, played by two of Calgary's most important thespians, Paul Spence and Dave Lawrence. Set for release in late 2010, reports indicate that the film will be a Christmas story (lol).

MORE SWEET BANGERS

Continuing with the theme of longhairs behaving awesomely, here's this.

BSD 2009

Smalltown played at the annual BSD party at U of C on April 17th. It was such a crazy fun party - lots of crowd surfing and drunk youngsters. The video here:

MIKE 2600

Our good homie Mike the 2600 King from Burlesque Design just killed it at Hai Karate last week. He took some great photos on his Canadian mini-tour and you can see them here:
