Wax Romeo Top 10 of 2010
What a bitch this was to do. It was a good year though. Happy 2011, you guys! Here's the listy:
10. PARIS - In Crowded Subways (In Flagranti remix)
Anyone who knows me at all knows what a big In Flagranti fan I am. This was my favourite thing they did all year. The synthwork is aces in this one. Classy.
9. Murphy Jax feat. Mike Dunn (Alden Tyrell rmx)
Solid choon. I never want to mix out. The Legowelt remix is dope, as is the original, but the little acidy flair puts this one on top for me.
8. Bassanovva - Terrordactyl
I love the spooky twinkles and the dino-shrieks in the track. Not to mention the track was done by two of our specialfriends, one Grahmzilla, and the other, Ms. Jess Jubilee.
7. Carte Blanche - Politrix As Usual
The only way you write a riff like that is with a mouse.
6. Hannulelauri - Super Monkey
Cheeky monkey. Cheeky track.
5. Punks Jump Up - Blockhead
I think I looked for this track as hard as anyone when it was the Zongamin remix. So busy and loud, but it works. That steel drum sounding thing is the kicker.
4. Pablo Decoder & Tim Healey - Echoes In My Head (Alex Gopher remix)
I like Alex gopher a lot, so I kind of knew I'd like this before listening, cause his shit is always solid. Listen to the original (it's stinky), and you'll realize that this remix is fucking brilliant. Kind of like a funkier Soulwax. Fuck, did he ever rescue this one.
3. Smalltown Romeo - Party Motion (Malente remix)
Malente is the man. He made a dope remix despite the fact that the vocals were done by me and Smalltown Pete. Sounds good loud. Pitched down tom-tom bassline sounds nice in a club. Germany!!!
2. Dennis Ferrer - Red Room
He had a huge hit last year with "Hey Hey", and I kind of feel like this track is the opposite of all the things that made "Hey Hey" such a hit. Gone are the poppy vocals, big-room proggy percussion, and dramatic builds. Instead, this track sounds like a mushroom trip in a snake pit, with some "Wiccan ex-girlfriend" type on vocals. I like it a lot.
1. Hrdvsion - Captivated Heart
Such a quirky and irreverent track; by far my favourite of the year. Spooky as fuck, that haunting female vocal and plonky piano line do it for me every time. I dig the crackle on the drums, and when the acidy bassline drops midway through, it sets shit off jusssssst right. It's one of those tracks that when you play it, you can count on someone asking you about what it is. Despite being a weird creep, this guy is one of my favourite producers, and I can already *guarantee* that he'll be in my top 10 next year.

SMALLTOWN ROMEO - PARTY MOTION
After much fanfare and a long wait, tomorrow is the date, our new single Party Motion will be coming out on Plant Music available exclusively at Beatport.com
Here is what our label Plant Music has to say about it:
“As expected, the boys have created a tune that reflects their all-over-the-place musical tastes, from disco to hip-hop to house to electro, and this one is suitable for many different dance floors. The package comes with the much sought-after Malente remix which has already seen massive support from Diplo as well as tastemakers like Brodinski, Drop The Lime and Sinden. This mix should come with a face-melt warning. Don’t say we didn’t give you a heads up! In Flagranti, always sure to take things in a unexpected direction, comes through with a mix that veers the song towards disco but really stomps – a disco stomper? Yes. Stones Throw’s James Pants delivers a crazy tropical bass workout that is quite a departure from anything he’s done thus far – slightly left field, clever but dance floor friendly at the same time. Finally, Plant newcomer Grandtheft turns “Party Motion” into big room electro house but as always, keeps it classy. What’s that, did you just ask about the “Party Motion” video? After the sensational animated video for “Boom-Ha” it only makes sense. Rest assured, it’s almost in the can, again directed by Matt Luckhurst!"
You can check out the full EP here (and remember to buy it on Beatport tomorrow!):

Hai Karate 11 Year
We've been running our crazy night for 11 years! Holy shit! What started as a night where we wanted to abandon formats and just play great music (it may be hard to believe but it was rare at the time) - has turned into a monster. Come celebrate with us tomorrow night at Hifi. We'll have some kind of shenanigans going on. Thanks for the support for all this time!

We're stoked to spook out, and party with you on the 30th at Local 522, so grease up, it's gonna be a party!!

My Dad's New New Mixtape
My dad is always writing down playlists and new songs in his notebook. Then when he has about 100 or so compiled he will usually narrow them down to fit on one mix. Then he puts them on his ipod and it becomes the soundtrack to his life for a while. This is the latest playlist, and this time he got our good buddy & dj Ivan Rankic to help him out and string them together into a continuous mix. The result is pretty awesome.

Rock, Break & Boogie (Smalltown Djs Edit)
This tune was produced in 1985 by awesome Italo Disco pioneer Salvatore Cusato. It's a great combination of Moroder style disco and early 80s rap music. He also did this amazing and hilarious tune Robin Cook's Comanchero.
This edit makes it a little more dj friendly for the clurb:

BONJAY
Also - in case you missed this last month, Bonjay have a new single. They've played twice in the last year with us at Hifi and hey brought the house down both times. They are undoubtedly one of Canada's brightest up-and-coming dance music talents.
Here you can get their awesome new single called "Stumble" - FIYAH!
Telephoned Tour Tales
A couple of weeks ago we ran into Sammy Bananas & Maggie Horn as they were on tour opening for Chromeo & Holy Ghost! in Calgary. HUGGS SUMMER MIX
Huggs is a legendary DJ troubadour. He has played with us a million times at Hifi, but he never has a mix done that we can use to promote with. This summer he just finished a few mixes, which is great because he has phenomenal taste. Its full of a bunch of non club and indie rock type tunes. It should be a good listen for a Monday morning. Our good pal in Berlin (via Dublin) DJ Wool has another release out. And I'm pretty fucking wild about it. Sounds like he's been in Berlin for a bit, if you ask me. It drops tomorrow, June 28th on Beatport, go grab it. You'll be glad you did. Here's the vid:
Hot on the heels of the Das Shadow and Broad Bean Band releases, the new true-blue MONOlith label/collective known as We Collect Enemies hits you across the back with another banger by a brother under another name.
DJ Wool (AKA one 3rd of the originators of the WCE clique) has been on a tear for the last year with non-stop remixes, singles and new material for his group The Glass. Here he is with yet another feather in his cap, this time under the ID known as The Dark Snuggler!
Described as a "techy and breaky club banger" with hints of Detroit and bass, he's aiming this inaugural release at a bullseye on a target that exists in a place between fidget house, techno and dare we say, old school hip-hop? Whatever it gets described as, it bumps and clouds the dance floor like a smoke machine on auto.
With remixes by Lars Moston (Moston & Malente), Boeoes Kaelstigen (Adrian Recordings, Sweden) and Jetlag (collab. between The Smiths’ bassist Andy Rourke, yes THE Smiths and Russian/NYC DJ Ole), the release promises to pack lots of pop for the price coming from your pocket. A definite natural disaster in these days of earhquakes, oil leaks and volcano eruptions courtesy of the kind people over at We Collect Enemies. The 'Detroit' inspired video hits a youtube near you real soon...
‘The Dark Snuggler’ will be released exclusively on Beatport on 28th June 2010 and other download sites from 12th July.

Smalltown Romeo vs. The Swiss
The Swiss are an awesome new disco group on Modular Records out of Australia. If you got the Smalltown Romeo Don't Be Weird Mix for Flashing Lights then you would have heard their production on the intro track. It's blended with the vocal from our Boom Ha tune - and together they work pretty well. Here is the edit here for you to download:
BOOM HA (Smalltown Pete's Bubble Bath Blend) by SMALLTOWN ROMEO
BOOM HA (Smalltown Pete's Bubble Bath Blend) - Smalltown Romeo (Mediafire)
If you like this then go buy music from The Swiss &/or Smalltown Romeo at Beatport or itunes or something. Thanks.

LET'S DO SOME MATH...
2000 flushes ÷ 120 days (4 months) = 16.777777 flushes a day.
That's *ONE* toilet, so don't give me some bullshit "family of 4" scenario. Maybe, if you're flushing that much in a given day, you should worry less about how best to clean your favourite chair, and a little more about eating some fucking vegetables.
For fuck's sake. :)

SMALLTOWN vs. NEOTERIC at BSD 2010
A couple weeks ago Smalltown Mike played this crazy outdoor party with our good homie Neoteric at the University of Calgary. It's called Bermuda Shorts Day and Smalltown has become a closing fixture over the years. The kids are always so stoked to be done school for the year and they like to show it.

MUSIC TO SUFFER BY
So, I gotta post this album I found. It's was done, apparently, by a wealthy socialite from the 50's, or some shit, who really loved music. So much so, that she hired and orchestra to record with as she sung the songs on her (only?) album, aptly titled, "Music To Suffer By". She's got a kitschy, campy, mock-opera style of singing. The vocals are so fucked up, and terrible, to the the point that they stick in your head and haunt you, days later, when you're trying to concentrate on something important. Download the album and play it in it's entirety the next time you have a dinner party, or bbq, and it'll definitely get people talking. I think the best one is "Yo Ho The Crow". It's a spooki. Also, "Rats In My Room" is a good one:
Downlad this album, it's fucked:

My Dad's New Mixtape
It's always a surprise to people when I tell them about some of my dad's favourite bands. He's consistently been excited about new music since I was a kid (and probably before that even :) So for Coachella this year he and my mum and sister are driving from Phoenix to Palm Springs where they'll have an RV set up right on site at the concert. He declared it to be "the best concert lineup he's ever seen" - and made a mixtape to get them amped up on the drive over to PS. A couple of the tunes were unknown to me, it's a really fresh sounding mix of great new rock music.
